The need for data aggregation and analytics across many data sources will require collaboration among providers of electronic medical record systems, genomic reference databases, next generation sequencing, proteomics, and diagnostic imaging, potentially resulting in terabytes of data uniquely characterizing each individual. Systems biology simulations and bioinformatics applications are being developed, yet the ability to translate these research applications to reliable clinical use presents several important challenges. Such issues include data transmission and storage, upward and downward application scalability, reliability, security, interoperability, compliance, validation and affordability.
