This talk will explore some potential solutions to Exascale I/O  problems driven by the following trends:=0A• Stripe sizes continue to expand to achieve speed, but the increase in component failures reduces availability.=0A• Drive capacities are increasing rapidly, 33%  this year alone, but this makes them increasingly vulnerable to triple failures.=0A• HDD improvements are disproportionate to CPU performance increases and to compensate, disk environments are scaling faster than clusters, with File Systems of 100K HDDs being planned.=0A• SSDs present an opportunity to address important elements of the Exascale IO challenge, but require architectural changes to effectively exploit.=0A=0AProblems that are tractable in today's systems will become acute at Exascale and will vastly reduce the value of investment storage infrastructures and the ROI for HPC systems overall.
