DDS is supposed to be used to create publish/subscribe systems by enabling a global information space of data organized into topics. Topics are published by participants of the system and get delivered to subscribers with quality of service (QoS) parameters such as are reliability, bandwidth, delivery deadlines and resource limits. These QoS features make DDS suitable for embedded and real-time (RT) applications and attractive to industry control and military systems. DDS adoption is relatively small in scientific applications. In this presentation we will give examples of such applications and provide a description of the DataFlow Processing System (DFPS) under development at Tech-X in collaboration with Fermilab. In particular, we will describe how one could implement data processing workflows based on map-reduce operations common in astronomy and high-energy and nuclear physics.
