The mission of PRACE is to enable high impact European scientific discovery, engineering research and development across all disciplines to enhance European competitiveness for the benefit of society. HPC organisations from fourteen countries prepared the legal, financial, and technical basis for the creation of the PRACE Research Infrastructure (RI) supported partly through the European Commission’s 7th Framework Program. Since April 2010 the PRACE Research Infrastructure is established as an international non-profit association with its seat in Brussels. Twenty-one European countries are presently members of the PRACE AISBL, represented through their national supercomputer organisations. France, Germany, Italy and Spain committed 100 mio. Euro each to fund and operate Tier-0 systems by 2012.=0A=0AAccess to the PRACE RI is open to European researchers and their collaborators from recognized European academic institutions and the industry. Calls for proposals are issued twice a year and are evaluated by leading scientists and engineers in a peer-review process governed by a PRACE Scientific Steering Committee. More than 70 projects have been granted resources on the first PRACE systems: the IBM Blue Gene/P at Germany’s Gauss Center (GCS) for Supercomputing in Juelich, a Bullx system of the French’s Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif (GENCI) and=0Athe CRAY XE6 system at Germany’s Gauss Center for Supercomputing in Stuttgart.=0A=0APRACE has an extensive pan-European education and training effort in order to aid users and potential users as well as preparing the next generation scientists and engineers. PRACE also encourages collaboration with industry and industrial use and conducts annual industrial seminars throughout Europe. PRACE also seeks to strengthen the European HPC industry through various initiatives and has a strong interest in improving energy efficiency of computing systems and reducing their environmental impact.
