Hence it is important to optimize simulation codes for fast execution on contemporary massively-parallel architectures. We have parallelized the well-established realistic heart model PROPAG using a hybrid OpenMP-MPI approach capable of running large-scale simulations with billions of degrees of freedom, which is among the largest problem sizes reported in the literature for this field. We present an in-depth performance analysis of the scalability of our code on up to 8k cores. We demonstrate a performance improvement of 24 - 62% for the multithreaded code and analyze the advantages of the hybrid execution model for this application type.
