SC is the International Conference for
High Performance Computing, Networking,
Storage and Analysis

SCHEDULE: NOV 12-18, 2011

When viewing the Technical Program schedule, on the far righthand side is a column labeled "PLANNER." Use this planner to build your own schedule. Once you select an event and want to add it to your personal schedule, just click on the calendar icon of your choice (outlook calendar, ical calendar or google calendar) and that event will be stored there. As you select events in this manner, you will have your own schedule to guide you through the week.

You can also create your personal schedule on the SC11 app (Boopsie) on your smartphone. Simply select a session you want to attend and "add" it to your plan. Continue in this manner until you have created your own personal schedule. All your events will appear under "My Event Planner" on your smartphone.

Developing the Rarest of the Rare: Low-level Systems Infrastructure Skills at Scale

SESSION: Special Topic: Workforce Development

EVENT TYPE: Workforce Development Panel

TIME: 1:30PM - 3:00PM

Panelists:Garth Gibson, Garth Gibson, Gary Grider, Rob Ross, Karsten Schwan

ROOM:WSCC 2A/2B

ABSTRACT:
The central challenge for coming era of Exascale and Data Intensive Scientific Discovery will be the scale at which large computers operate. Universities and laboratory internships will increasingly be called upon to train a workforce capable of effectively utilizing such large-scale computers, yet today students rarely have access to clusters of more than a handful of computers. Today’s computer systems implementer needs experience with, repeatable control over, and permission to change large-scale computer software in order to innovate to meet the needs of the coming era of increasing scale. The topic of this panel is how best to improve student preparation for programming low-level systems infrastructure software in large scale computers. We will be making a 1000+ cluster available for this purpose and seek the communities input on how to maximize the impact of this facility (www.newmexicoconsortium.org/probe).
