Currently, data and analysis resources lag behind the rapidly evolving needs of the field. This disparity in needs and resources is being examined through multiple avenues, most recently during the Second NSF sponsored Data Intensive Science Workshop (DISW-2, May 16-17, 2011). This workshop expanded the findings of DISW-1 (2010) and acknowledged the need for a Data Intensive Biology Alliance to be a voice and framework for the needs of the community. We are actively formalizing the alliance, and have compiled a mailing list of over 60 members. DISW-3 will describe data intensive biology challenges and the Alliance to the HPC community, and will elicit feedback to contribute to solutions.
